Combining the titles of the band's output sinceand discounting the four albums that came before that -- fully admits what fans and the band have been winking and nudging about since the sea change of Cowboys From Hell. The 1990 album marks the real beginning of Pantera, simply because it records for posterity the moment when the Texas quartet began to truly, consciously kick ass. Best of Pantera further defines that timeline, and marks in blood and spilled booze the band's place in history. Even if it's a little heavy on material from Far Beyond Driven and Reinventing the Steel (these albums get four songs, while others get between one and three), the true zenith of each Pantera album is duly represented, making Best of Pantera the essential testament to the band's destruction of metal's precepts. But since it's chronologically arranged, it's also the perfect introduction for anyone not yet familiar with the Cowboys From Hell. It's difficult to find a way out during the first half's onslaught, where material from Pantera's definitive early-'90s output snaps its jaws around your ankle. Later, after the incredible sludge of "Drag the Waters," it's time for some live material, as well as a fun run through "Cat Scratch Fever," Ted Nugent's classic cock rock nugget that plays right into Pantera's famously bawdy lifestyle. (The track originally appeared on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack.) Of the latter-day material, what's most apparent is that vocalist Phil Anselmo only became more effective and vengeful with age. On tracks like the grinding "I'll Cast a Shadow," you can just about feel the knife turning in his stomach. The staggering, pounding instrumentation of the track only makes Anselmo's vocals more visceral. Ending its first greatest-hits package with Reinventing the Steel's highlights restates the band's original purpose -- to make metal its own, no holds barred and no prisoners needed. This mantra is made clear for the benefit of new listeners, and reaffirmed in the hearts and minds of the faithful. REGION-CODE: NTSC CODE 0 SCREEN-FORMAT: 4:A few years ago after listening to "Grand Destiny", Sear Bliss knocked Agarthi out of first place on my personal list of favorite Red Stream bands. I just couldn't get enough of their raw symphonic and Classically inspired Black Metal sound that was mixed with brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones. The brass instruments really gave the music a medieval battle sound, and it listening to the band for the first time was such a unique experience that Sear Bliss became one of my favorite bands of all time. Sadly, as always with bands from across the Atlantic, they have not yet come to the U.S. to play any live shows. Hopefully they will soon, but until then we can all enjoy their new DVD "Decade Of Perdition". It's not the real live experience, but it's the next best thing!"Decade Of Perdition" is a live DVD that they recorded in Budapest, Hungary on their tenth anniversary! Wow, ten years... Congratulations guys! The ten tracks on the DVD span the band's entire career, and as a special bonus for the celebration they had Attila, vocalist for Tormentor, Keep Of Kalessin and the mighty Mayhem come on stage to do guest vocals for "Birth Of Eternity" (he also does guest vocals for this track on the "Glory And Perdition" album). On another track they also have one of their old guitarists (Viktor Scheer) come out and give the fans a glimpse of the past. The band shows a lot of energy and Andras Nagy belts out his vocals in a way that makes him contort his face in a Cronos-like sneer! Zoltan, the trombone player, never misses a note than I can hear, and when he's not playing the trombone he's headbanging like a madman. Trombone players in my highschool band class were considered geeks, but Zoltan looks cool playing the instrument. Another really almost unbelievable thing is seeing the Keyboardist switch seamlessly from playing the keyboard to playing the trumpet! That must be harder than hell! The sound of this live show is almost studio quality, and I have no problems with it at all. The one small problem I did have with the DVD is that when the camera moves fast or there's fast movement on screen, the video image has this ripple effect that causes things to blur and have this right to left line effect. It's odd. When I first popped the DVD in, I thought it was just one of the cameras having a problem, but all three cameras used to film this show have the same problem for some reason. It's almost like they recorded the show with a low frame rate. This ripple effect even carries over into the bonus behind the scene footage. It's not all that big of a deal, but it would have been nice if it had better quality video.The bonus footage included on the disc is close to an hour long and includes all kinds of backstage footage, like footage from various album recording sessions and footage of the band screwing around. Zoltan, the Sear Bliss drummer, who is referred to on this DVD as "Somi" is a blast to watch. Drunk most of the time, he humors himself by drinking booze with Skyforger, smashing posts on the side of the road with his Black Metal Stomp Of Death, Jumping headfirst into garbage cans and pissing in snowbanks then rubbing his head in it among other things I won't go into here! Also, you'll find Zoltan is very resourceful when it comes to food. When he can't find much to eat, he takes an apple, cuts it in half and puts a slice of salami in the middle. Mmmmm... Mmmmm! Apple salami sandwiches! All of the guys are shown screwing around backstage and on the tour bus except for Andras. He must be the "grown up" and mature one of the group. Well, Andras is shown backstage showing off the bouquet of flowers a 47 year old man gave him onstage. Hahahaha... The bonus features also include a few clips from various live shows over the years, and a little piece on the work Sear Bliss did with a National Hungarian Theater and The Beggars Opera. One of the funniest parts of the bonus features has a recording engineer of some sort in the studio listening to the newest Sear Bliss tracks, and when Andras' vocals kick in, he nearly jumps out of his chair and yells "I can't record that! F**k! This is brutal!". The bonus features also include a multitude of interviews with people involved in all aspects of Sear Bliss. Andras Nagy talks about how the band was started and how cover art is important to an album (finally, a musician that understands that well!), Zoltan talks about how brass instruments work in Sear Bliss's music, and each other member talks about how they got into music and how they came about joining the band. Also, what I thought was cool on the band's part is they did a small interview with my favorite Metal album cover artist of all time, Kris Verwimp, where he talks about each of the album covers he's done for the band. Last but not least, the DVD includes a photo gallery set up like a slide show where the photos automatically pass by as music plays.As for the technical aspects of the DVD, I already talked about how great the sound was and the slight problem with the video. Aside from those the features included on this DVD include: Dolby 5.1, interactive menus and 2.0 stereo sound. A majority of the bonus footage is spoken in Hungarian, but there are English subtitles for everything everyone says.This DVD is all things it should be - fun, informative about the band's past, and entertaining. If you are a Sear Bliss fan, "Decade Of Perdition" is a mandatory purchase.
